The Complete Steve Ditko: 1953/54 is the second Fantagraphics/Blake Bell project set for
release in 2009. Following up on Bell’s 2008 critical retrospective of Ditko’s career, this new
project will, for the first time, feature full-color reprints of every story from the first two years of Ditko’s career. From Ditko’s first story being flipped from one publisher to another, to Ditko’s short stint in the Joe Simon/Jack Kirby studio, to Ditko’s encampment at the Charlton Comics operation in 1954, readers will get to see the initial works of an artist already at a level of craftsmanship that exceeded most of his peers. Similar to Everett’s work of the day, this is Ditko unfiltered, producing horror material that featured graphic bloodshed, dismemberment and blood-curdling acid baths as the ugly end to the lives of the dark and twisted inhabitants of Steve Ditko’s imagination.
Fantagraphics publisher Gary Groth thinks this is some of Ditko’s ripest work. “This is arguably his most interesting period, before the comics industry domesticated him to some extent, when his work at its most stylistically uninhibited. It will serve as a perfect companion to Blake’s earlier book on Ditko.”

ce qui me troue, à chaque fois que je lis cette histoire, c'est la fusion totale de l'enseignementde Robinson (les postures des personnages et leurs expressions) et les ambiances à la Will Eisner : toute la séquence du réveil du "patient" et celle de la tentative de meurtre sur le Dr Strange ne dépareraient pas dans The Spirit (il reprend d'ailleurs le motif du cimetière de Wildwood).
mais en sus il ya déjà les idées de Ditko sur la justice (le final) et son savoir-faire (et les détails hyper chiadés comme les points sur les gants, la méticulosité de maniaque sur l'oeil d'Agamotto, le look de Cauchemar déjà pensé)

C'est typique le genre d'épisodes qui me fait dire que Doc Strange est, là encore, un personnage qui se prêterait merveilleusement à l'écriture à l'épisode, chaque récit devenant une petite fable rondement menée. C'est pourquoi j'aime beaucoup la période de Roger Stern, où scénariste et personnage s'en sortaient très bien dans les récits à suivre, certes, mais fonctionnaient à merveille sur des récits courts, avec des chutes marquantes. Si je devais éditer un reboot du personnage, je chercherais un scénariste capable de "tenir la distance" sur une suite de récits courts (quitte à inscrire l'ensemble dans un cycle plus vaste : c'est comme ça que Warren Ellis a abordé l'écriture de STORMWATCH, et on se souvient encore de la qualité du truc). Les pouvoirs du personnages et leur implication se prêtent très bien à des notions comme l'âme, l'esprit, la mémoire, les sentiments…

Spider-Man/Dr Strange update
My Spider-Man/Dr Strange story is now at the half way point. It's a three issue mini-series that will appear under the Marvel Knights banner, probably in the early summer. It's been great fun drawing and writing the series, and Marvel seem to love what I'm creating so far. I'm coloring the book with SteveCOok, who designed the SWIMINI PURPOSE book for me a few years ago.
Although I can't show any of the art yet, I have been messing about with some classic Ditko images from that superb story he created with Stan, for the second Spider-Man annual in 1965. TWIIIP!

I'm writing and drawing a Dr Strange and Spider-man graphic novel that will appear as a three part mini series, sometime this summer. Marvel approached me after seeing my 'freak-out' final issue of Solo that I created in the previous year for DC Comics. I was asked what I'd like to draw, and like any artist with a taste for the bizarre, I chose Dr Strange. Marvel asked me to add Spidey to help the sales, which was fine by me - plus, one of my favourite comic strips ever was the team-up created by Lee and Ditko in the second Spider-Man Annual in 1965. The thread spun through all of this is, of course, the incomparable imagination displayed by Dr Strange's creator and artist, Steve Ditko. I am always attracted to higly original and bizarre art.
Of course, I can never hope to match the astonishing beauty and oddness of Ditko's visual style, but to pay homage and have alot of fun was the basic idea! I'm getting a bit bored with the 'hard edged' comic vibe prevalent at the moment in the industry, so I prefer to create a comic strip that owes more to The Wizard of Oz, Yellow Submarine and The Mighty Boosh, and simply, to put out a comic that is a bit different... A light-hearted and surreal yarn that evokes the fantastic 60s Ditko weirdness of Dr Strange and Spidey. TWIP!

Le label "Marvel Knights" a publié ces deux dernières années X-Men: Magneto Testament, Logan, Angel: Revelations, Punisher: War Zone, Spider-Man: With Great Power... et Sub-Mariner: The Depths. C'est clair que c'est peu. Quant à la qualité, je ne peux rien dire, je n'en ai lu aucun !
